Literacy

What is literacy?

Literacy is listening, viewing, thinking, speaking, reading, writing, and expressing through multiple symbol systems at a developmentally appropriate level.  (Moxley & Taylor, Literacy Coaching: A Handbook for School Leaders)

 How did it begin?

In the fall of 2005, a county-wide literacy committee was established. The partnership with interested teachers, Northwest Regional Education Service District, and support from Columbia County Superintendents has continued to the present.

 What is a Literacy Coach?

Simply stated, coaches support teachers in helping their students succeed with literacy.

What does this look like?

A good analogy is the children’s book written by Slobodkina.  It has a peddler who carries his many caps upon his head.  A coach also has many caps and they continually change throughout the day.  These caps/roles may include:

  • Meet with and support teachers’ literacy needs
  • Assist teachers in using the writing process
  • Model lessons
  • Team-teach with staff
  • Provide staff development through book clubs
  • Set up and manage professional library and materials
  • Give presentations
  • Contact and work with publishers of adopted texts
  • Look at district data
  • Member of district data team
  • Research assessments and materials for RTI
  • Assess individual students
  • Provide literary events for students and families
  • Work closely with both libraries to provide student book clubs
  • Develop and maintain web page
  • Schedule the Columbian Room
Columbian Room

 Reserving the Columbian Room:

Staff and community members may use the Columbian Room during and after school.  It will seat ten people comfortably.  For scheduling you may either email me directly, or send a request by going to the Columbian Room calendar page and click on "Add Events".

Rule for the Columbian Room:

"No Trace Living" is familiar to our sixth graders and those involved with Outdoor School.  It means that we leave the place we visit in as good or better condition than when we find it.  This concept also applies to the use of this room.
