Back to school

September 10, 2020

Dear Rainier School District #13 Families and Community,

I hope this summer has treated you well and you are preparing for a new and improved school year!  As you may already know, your teachers have been back to work since last Wednesday and working hard to get the Comprehensive Distance Learning started.  After an evening of reflection, I realized that our amazing staff have been put under a lot of pressure as I have developed a new Google Classroom Model and increased teacher expectations with a curriculum that will better meet your child’s learning needs.

The beginning of the school year is always a challenging time but with the addition of a pandemic, wildfires, and a new superintendent, the challenges are magnified.  Drawing from my past experience in virtual education, I will continue to work with our staff to ensure every child has:

·       Access to their classroom.

·       A challenging and engaging curriculum.

·       Paper-based instruction for those without technology or access.

In light of my requirements, late arrival to Rainier School District, and the ability to ensure everyone’s success, we are delaying the start of school.  The new first day of CDL will be Monday, September 21, 2020.  I want to thank you in advance for your flexibility and understanding.  I want nothing more than to have an incredible school year which will require additional training and preparation.  Because RSD has more instructional time than required by the state, we will not be required to extend the school year.  Additionally, student credit-earning ability will not be impacted!  Below is a revised calendar of events for the next week:

September 10, 2020: Tech pickup at Airlock – 8:00AM-6:00PM
September 10, 2020: Virtual Back-to-School Night
Rainier Preschool and HPE
September 11, 2020: First meal delivery
September 14, 2020: Virtual Back-to-School Night
Rainier JR/SR High and NCA
September 15, 2020: Tech pickup at Airlock – 3:00PM-6:00PM
September 16 & 18, 2020: Tech pack/meal deliveries
September 21, 2020: First day of school for students (CDL)

Again, I want to thank you for your patience and understanding.  Please keep an eye on our Facebook pages and website for updates over the next week.  I am planning to announce updated athletic plans and hybrid plans (including preK-3 in-person instruction).  As metrics continue to decrease in Columbia County, I am hopeful that we can return to an in-person learning model soon.

Your partner in education,

Dr. Hattrick

Interim Superintendent
