Dear Rainier School District Community,

I hope you are having a wonderful October! While the school year is off to a great start, we wanted to take this opportunity to bring some issues to the attention of this great school community, and highlight some opportunities to support our students’ school experience.

School Pride
This year, while we are thrilled to have remained in-person for instruction, coming out of the COVID Pandemic has increased behavioral incidents including high levels of vandalism. In the seven short weeks we have been in session, multiple restrooms and common spaces have had to be closed due to unprecedented levels of vandalism to property. A great deal of time and attention was spent on making improvements to our campus so students could have greater pride in their learning environments. Vandalism like we have been seeing only detracts from the pride our students have in their school. If you could talk to your child(ren) about the importance of respecting property as well as those with whom they come in contact, we would be very appreciative. We will continue to monitor and respond to these incidents accordingly but we could use everyone’s help to resolve these issues.

Opportunities to Serve
Whether you are interested in working, volunteering, or collaborating at Rainer School District, we have many opportunities. Currently we have Instructional Assistant Positions and a few teaching positions that have remained unfilled. If you or someone you know is interested in working for us, please direct them to rainier.k12.or.us/employment.

We also have volunteer positions available at both the school and district levels through one of many committees. We are currently accepting applications to serve on a variety of committees (Safety which includes facility plans, Superintendent Advisory, Curriculum Review, and Equity and Diversity) and would encourage you to consider applying. You can find a link to the application on our website or by clicking here. If you are interested in volunteering with your child’s class, you can pick up a volunteer application in the office. If you were previously interested in volunteering but were unable due to vaccination status, please consider reapplying. While vaccination is required, you may apply for a medical or religious exception.

Oregon Statewide Assessment Results
This morning the Oregon Department of Education released the 2021-2022 state assessment results and school dashboards. Like most school districts around the country, Rainier School District’s data is concerning. Throughout the testing window during the Spring of 2021-22 we had many students unable to complete the assessment due to illness and/or quarantine.

Since last spring, our schools have developed robust improvement plans which seek to address the learning losses brought on by the pandemic. Interventions such as after-school tutoring, adoption of the English Language Arts curriculum, character education, and data-aligned decision making will all support improvement in our students’ academic growth and achievement.

These academic interventions have been implemented for this school year but it is important to remember that our students will reap the greatest benefit from academic, character development, and extra-curricular opportunities through parent and community support. Please join with us in stressing the importance of respect, dedication, and teamwork this school year.

Student of the Month (Business Advisory)
If you or a business owner you know would like to take a more active role in partnering with us and celebrating with our students, we still have opportunities for businesses/individuals to join our business advisory group which will be responsible for our student of the month program. We have had a delay in starting this program while we wait for the final six businesses to volunteer to be part of this great opportunity. To learn more, please review the flier available on the Rainier School District website.

As always, thank you for choosing Rainier School District and for your support as we strive to make everyday the best it can be for our students, staff, and community.

Your partner in Education,

Dr. Joseph Hattrick
Superintendent
